CHAPTER 5

Making her way down the stairs to chair yet another press conference, Sara felt a headache brewing. Damn, why didn’t I pop a couple of paracetamols before tackling the journos?

The second she laid eyes on her, Jane appeared concerned. “Hey, you look rough. Everything okay? I thought it was strange when Carla got in touch with me earlier.”

“I’m fine. The start of a headache coming on, no big deal. I’ve just been cursing myself for not taking some tablets before coming down here. I don’t suppose you have any on you, do you?”

Jane smiled. “You’d be surprised what I carry in my handbag. Ta da!” Jane produced a foil packet of tablets and gestured for Sara to hold her hand out. She popped two out of the foil and into the palm of Sara’s hand, then dipped into the conference room and returned with a glass of water from the jug she’d already set up in the room.

“It’s still filling up in there, so there’s no rush if you want to delay it a minute or two. It might not be a bad idea and will allow the tablets to start working.”

“Except now I’ll get even more stressed because you’ve told me there’s a roomful of journalists getting ready to pounce on me.” Sara pushed the pills down the back of her throat with her finger, making herself retch, and then washed them down with a large gulp of water.

“Blimey, I hope you don’t need to take tablets that often if it’s that much torture for you?”

“It is, but thankfully I don’t need to rely on them that often. Bugger, I didn’t make any notes for the occasion. I’m going to have my back against the wall from the outset in there.”

“Stop stressing. I recall you’ve always managed it in the past, despite your reservations. Why should this time be any different? It won’t be, so try to chill. You should be used to holding one of these by now.”

“You’d think so, wouldn’t you? Not this time, though. Come on, shall we venture in there? Time’s a wasting for the babes that are missing.”

Jane gave her a quick hug to reassure her and then led the way into the room and onto the slight stage that she had set up in readiness. Sara took her glass with her, sat at the table in front of the bulging crowd and topped up her glass from the half-filled jug beside her.

“How are you holding up?” Jane leant in and whispered.

“Let’s get this over and done with. I’m ready, if you are.”

Jane didn’t think twice, didn’t need to prepare herself. She turned to the journalists and said the relevant spiel which settled the room down. Sara was in awe of her confidence as usual. Ever the professional, able to turn it on with a click of her fingers. Sara couldn’t help but feel a tad envious of her colleague as she spoke. Then Jane handed the conference over to Sara who felt anything but confident.
